Your new company
Hays are delighted to be working in partnership with Historic England, a public body that looks after England's historical environment. You will work for a company who champion historic places, helping people to better understand, value, and also care for them. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face globally. There is critical work to be undertaken on historic buildings to ensure they remain safe and viable to be enjoyed by future generations. This is your opportunity to make a generational lasting impact on the historical environment.

Your new role
As Head of Historic Buildings with a focus on climate change adaptation, you will be a powerful and persuasive advocate on the appropriate methods of maintenance, repair, and adaptation of the historical building stock for net-zero and climate resilience. You will work with key internal and external stakeholders and learning from others, you will be a visible leader, providing an authoritative voice on attaining the combined objectives of achieving net-zero emissions and climate resilience whilst sustaining the values of the historic built environment.

As part of your new role, you will lead the delivery of evidence-based advice and guidance on best practice methods of maintenance, repair and adaptation of historic building stock. You will lead and coordinate a prioritised and targeted programme of research to develop the evidence base required to underpin the advice given, this will require liaison with colleagues and external stakeholders to identify evidence gaps, ensuring that research reflects the highest academic and professional standards.

What you'll need to succeed
You will be an Architect, Chartered Building Surveyor, or Chartered Architectural Technologist with current ARB, RICS, or CIAT membership. At the shortlisting and interview phase, you will need to demonstrate appropriate and wide-ranging experience in the repair and adaptation of historic buildings, including diagnosing defects and a good understanding of the implications and interventions required. You will need to have a firm grasp of current UK legislation, policy, guidance and best practice driving the decarbonasation of buildings, and willingness to keep abreast of changes.

What you'll get in return
Joining Historic England is your opportunity to achieve what might be the best work balance you have achieved across your career. Historic England offer a wide benefits package, including a pension scheme starting at 28% employer contributions, annual leave at 28 days + bank holidays with options to buy additional leave, enhanced maternity and paternity leave, professional subscription fees paid, corporate discounts, free entry into English Heritage sites across the country and ongoing training and development.
