Your new company
Somerset Council is a unitary authority, governing the district of Somerset in the Southwest of England. A dynamic vision puts the people of Somerset at the heart of what we do, a council who will be there for residents whenever needed. As a newly formed council, there is an opportunity to harness it by bringing together experience, expertise, assets, and networks from five predecessor councils, creating a stronger position to advocate for Somerset on regional, national, and international platforms.

This is your opportunity to help build a fairer, greener, resilient, more flourishing Somerset.

Your new role
You will join an experienced and passionate existing team of property professionals who are responsible for the strategic input and influence on council owned development and regeneration schemes, which include economy enhancing plans ranging from acquisitions of community areas through to large mixed-used projects such as Firepool in Taunton. You will work with a wide range of internal and external professional stakeholders to ensure that there is a 'market led' approach to the development of schemes, undertaking market analysis and using professional intelligence to ensure that plans are fit for purpose.

As part of your role, you will also:

  • Analyse and evaluate complex technical information to develop commercial judgements and provide professional advice.
  • Help to negotiate terms for acquisition or disposal of sites (freehold / leasehold) to ensure that best value is obtained.
  • Identify, and co-ordinate external and internal stakeholders and suppliers to ensure cases and schemes are progressed effectively.
  • Outline scopes and detailed design to ensure fit with applicable rental markets.
  • Work closely with the council planning function to ensure strategic objectives are secured through site allocation decisions.
  • Develop and deliver secure planning consents.

What you'll need to succeed
To succeed in this position, you should meet the following criteria as best possible, please schedule an exploratory conversation to discuss or gain clarity where required:

  • Display an excellent understanding of property development and regeneration.
  • Display an understanding of planning legislation and processes.
  • Demonstrate experience of compulsory purchase orders, disposals and acquisitions.
  • Posses relevant experience and Professional qualifications - MRICS.
  • The ability to manage and work in partnership with multiple stakeholders.

You will need to be comfortable working autonomously where required, as well as within a team environment, meeting regularly in Somerset based offices.

What you'll get in return
A role with Somerset Council will offer a wide range of career-enhancing and personal employment benefits.

  • Opportunity to access market leading training and support from chartered property professionals, which can include assistance with APC or professional development.
  • Access to the LGPS pension scheme - https://www.lgpsmember.org/
  • A formal flexible working arrangement, which includes the opportunity to focus on key role deliverable in a way which works for you and your family.
  • Hybrid working - the opportunity to work from home, combined with joining the team in Somerset.
  • Annual leave entitlement of 33 days, + public holidays.
