Job Details

Job Purpose
To plan and supervise work required for the operation and maintenance of leachate and gas control systems, along with associated plant and equipment at the companies 13 closed landfill sites and to ensure that leachate and gas controls systems achieve compliance with regulatory requirements in terms of health and safety and environmental compliance limits.

Main Accountabilities
Supervise - Promote a safety-first culture amongst all staff and contractors and provide safe and clean working environments on those sites for which responsibility is held. Ensure local compliance of activities with relevant Health & Safety requirements including Permits to Work & inductions. Monitor and review as necessary the safe systems of work applying to site activities. Ensure that all work is undertaken to the standards expected and achieves the objectives set
Inspect - Make regular visits to landfill sites with leachate and gas control systems to carry out and record inspections and ensure all infrastructure remain operational at all times. Review site monitoring data to identify non-compliances, system inefficiencies and system failures.
Maintain - Set up maintenance schedules for all components of leachate and landfill gas control systems including flares, pipe work, valves, pumps, instrumentation, treatment plants and discharges. Arrange and supervise contractors carrying out maintenance in accordance with health and safety systems, maintenance schedules and to deal with system failures wherever possible or call out appropriate contractor.
Assess - Supervise the installation of new systems and system upgrades when required and to assess their performance in relation to effectiveness, efficiency and cost.
Produce - Produce maintenance plans for specific new and existing items of plant and equipment, organise and implement work schedules accordingly;
Generate - Generate information and submit periodic reports to management and regulatory authorities as required
Manage - Support landfill compliance management as Technically Competent Manager (COTC). Obtain necessary qualifications to fulfil this role as required
Support - Support for the monitoring function of the department by ensuring all monitoring infrastructure is fit for purpose and accessible

Decision Making
1 - Ensure appropriate safe systems of work and risk assessments are provided to/completed with contractors.
2 - Identify causes of failure to systems and components and identify appropriate contractors to undertake repairs/replacements
3 - Escalate problems to line manager when deemed appropriate
4 - Prioritise work at sites when conflicts arise.


Challenges of the position
1 - Investigate causes of system breakdowns or efficiency issues.
2 - Identify needs of infrastructure repair and replacement
3 - Identify and implement corrective measures to ensure health, safety and site security minimum standards are maintained.
4 - Promptly investigate compliance failures and implement remedial action to bring the issue back to compliance.
