The new Building Safety Regulator (BSR) sits within HSE and is responsible for implementing a new regulatory regime and strategy for higher-risk residential buildings in England. The BSR oversees the safety and performance of the wider built environment, driving cultural change and increasing the competence of the building control profession.

We are now seeking a dedicated and passionate Chief Inspector of Buildings to lead the BSR on a full-time, permanent basis.

The Role

As the Chief Inspector of Buildings, you will lead the ongoing establishment and development of the new Building Safety Regulator (BSR).

In this high-profile, senior role, you will define, drive and enforce the necessary reformations to ensure the delivery of a successful new regulatory system for the safety and standard of high-rise residential buildings throughout England and the wider regulatory landscape.

With a commitment to improvement and innovation, you will ensure that safety and a desire for genuine cultural change across the sector are at the heart of our regulatory strategy. You will mobilise sectoral leaders and garner support to create an environment in which everyone takes responsibility for ensuring quality and safety.

Leading engagement with building owners, industry and residents, you will champion collaboration and advance understanding of the new regulatory process. You will strengthen public confidence in the standards of the built environment, the regulatory system, the BSR and HSE.

Additionally, you will:

• Work closely with our directors and Non-Executive Board to define how the new regulatory system fits within our broader strategic ambitions
• Tackle and address poor industry practices
• Deliver operational capabilities, systems and functions
• Engage with and provide robust advice and guidance to various high-calibre stakeholders
• Manage and develop the safety case regime

About You

To be considered as a Chief Inspector of Buildings, you will need:

• A strong track record of delivering reform and change of industry and/or stakeholders within a complex operational environment
• Experience of establishing and leading large, complex organisations, providing leadership, building capability and introducing innovation and cultural change
• Evidence of advising and influencing senior decision-makers, particularly on regulatory, technical and sector specific change
• Strong strategic thinking skills, enabling you to make swift and effective decisions and set priorities in areas of ambiguity
• The vision, leadership and interpersonal skills to quickly establish professional credibility and authority
• A proven track record of earning and retaining the trust of senior stakeholders
