Chemist based in Manchester, FMCG sector up to £34000 salary plus package

Your new company
You will be joining a leading European manufacturer of cleaning products. They have been operating since 1927 and employ 3,400 people across 18 locations in 12 countries. They develop, manufacture and distribute products for both Private Label clients in the retail segment and Contract Manufacturing for established brands. Due to growth they are looking to appoint a Chemist to the site in Manchester.

Your new role
The role is to manage the QC laboratory and support blending, NPD, and value engineering initiatives.

  • To act as a point of expertise for chemical analysis, training and calibration and manage the Microbiology function in providing an effective and efficient testing support for the factory
  • Identify/lead/implement quality improvement initiatives
  • Identify, lead and implement projects which deliver improved efficiency and cost saving benefits
  • Maintain the ISO9001, SGS & BRC quality management systems to ensure continued accreditation
  • Manage HACCP improvement exercises
  • Ensure that all actions from laboratory visits, audits and internal non-conformances are captured and regularly reviewed
  • Promote Health & safety awareness and improvement in by being actively involved in safety management systems
  • Point of expertise for product/component analysis, raw material issues, and technical support in blending / filling
  • Lead process improvement projects value engineering, NPD and EPD
  • Monitor supplier conformance and quality via KPI tracking systems
  • Identify, lead and implement projects which deliver improved efficiency and cost saving benefits
  • Maintain the ISO9001, SGS & BRC quality management systems for the laboratory to ensure continued accreditation
  • Has an understanding of what drives cost within own area, an appreciation of the factors, which influence profit, and use that understanding to achieve cost and service KPI's.
  • Strives to reduce costs within own area wherever possible without comprising on quality or service.


What you'll need to succeed

  • Degree or equivalent, Scientific discipline, ideally chemistry
  • Technical expertise in detergent liquid manufacture or related technologies or in the wider manufacturing sector
  • EHS experience in manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of surfactants, raw materials and analytical techniques.
  • Experience of BRC, HACCP, ISO, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience of application of process development improvement.
  • Knowledge of suitable processes and skills application.
