Job Description

Catalina Services UK Limited has an opportunity for a Technical Building Consultant whose responsibility will be the assessment and management of warranty risk on complex remedial schemes on high risk and high value residential and commercial properties. The Technical Building Consultant will be a new specialist role that will play a key part in Catalina’s reinsurance property claims process.

Key responsibilities

  • work on a reinsurance portfolio of new home warranty insurance;
  • develop a strong and dependable working relationship with Catalina’s reinsured, understanding their business and providing guidance that assists Catalina and its reinsured;
  • attend quarterly Claims Joint Working Party meetings, held between Catalina and its reinsured;
  • analytically review monthly and quarterly management information and claims reports, looking for trends, developments and patterns, and thereafter you will create and develop strategies and solutions;
  • assist in the development of claims (all varieties including large losses and systemic) strategies and prepare reports;
  • advise on the technical risk management of complex, high risk and high value remedial schemes;
  • once the relationship has been created between you and Catalina’s reinsured, you will:
  • engage with Catalina’s reinsured, from initial design to completion to provide expert knowledge, professional and technical advice on industry technical construction standards, codes and other relevant areas in order to guide them towards compliant, economical solutions that present an acceptable technical risk to both parties;
  • attend sites and undertake forensic investigations;
  • assist with the delivery of technical presentations to both internal and external customers where required; and
  • assist with training, coaching and mentoring of others as required.

Profile Characteristics

The successful candidate will:

  • have (or be able to demonstrate they are working towards) Chartered membership of an appropriate professional institution and have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of at least one of the following key areas: Building Regulations, engineering, inspection, building construction and technology;
  • have substantial relevant building/construction experience with substantial knowledge of the housing and commercial sectors, you will also have an understanding of building pathology and why and how buildings fail and result in claims and associated remediation. You will also possess an understanding and knowledge of environmental issues and relevant standards and legislation;
  • be personable;
  • on claims, undertake investigations, report on findings, prepare solutions for remedial work schemes, draft tender information, assess costs and undertake site inspections;
  • provide professional technical advice and support on the assessment of designs for compliance with Building Regulations and warranty standards;
  • prepare technical reports for builders and/or professional advisors and check reports prepared by others;
  • be a proactive, self-motivated, team player, flexible and willing to get involved with the development of the role;
  • manage all aspects of assigned claims projects to ensure delivery of outputs is within specified timescales and budget;
  • have good communication skills both verbal and written with appropriate interpersonal and presentational skills and will be IT literate and proficient in the use a range of MS Office software programs;
  • deliver technical presentations to both internal and external customers as required;
  • assist in implementing business efficiencies and opportunities for growth of the business;
  • be able to travel to sites as required, with a full UK driving licence; and
  • ensure compliance with Catalina’s and HSE requirements for personal safety and that of others.
