Construction Director - Falkland Islands - £80-100,000 + bonus + package


Our client is a well-established company in the Falkland Islands having delivered key services to the Islands for over a hundred years. They are looking to bring in a Construction Director to lead and grow their construction business. They have a significant land holding which has ongoing annual Residential Development and is open to Commercial, Hotel and Industrial Development options. They also currently have an expanding portfolio including 40 or so residential properties and are delivering on civil contracts, including road renewal and maintenance. In addition, they are tendering for and expect to add a broader range of construction projects in the short term and over the next 5 years.

This is a long-term permanent role, based in the Falkland Islands and will involve supported relocation to live in the Falkland Islands

Responsibilities: As a member of the Board of Directors of the Company, you will report to the Managing Director and be responsible for further growth and development of this construction business, based in the Falkland Islands. Leading and taking responsibility for planning and executing, the strategic growth and development decisions you will be working closely with the Managing Director and Finance Director also based in the Falkland Islands alongside you. You will be working with strategic construction partners such as; the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), the UK Ministry of Defence and Commander British Forces South Atlantic, FI Development Corporation (FIDC) and local business partners to maximise returns from the existing portfolio of land, commercial and residential property. In addition, the role will involve the development of new business streams linked to public and private construction projects, commercial development and residential property.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • As head of the construction business and a member of the board, you will lead the growth and development of this secure and longstanding business.
  • Leading projects, building a team as the business grows and projects won and delivered.
  • Managing the company and project budgets & costs putting together tender packages and appointing sub-contractors and consultants.
  • Have overall responsibility for the delivery of the company business plan objectives including project budgets and programme.
  • Engage and liaise with appointed consultants & architects and main & sub-contractors.
  • Monitor and manage risk to ensure that projects are delivered as per budget and programme.
  • Manage and maintain project progress, programme, costs, key risk items and strategies solutions against the agreed Business Plan throughout the duration of the projects.
  • Assist the finance team where necessary on satisfying finance agreement requirements.
  • Working with and producing projects and business reports with the MD and FD.
  • Chair meetings as required and ensure minutes are taken and reported.
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining and building new relationships and communication with relevant clients including the Falkland Islands Government (FIG), the UK Ministry of Defence and Commander British Forces South Atlantic, FI Development Corporation (FIDC) consultants, internal and external design teams and contractors and local business partners.
  • Attend relevant networking events that will assist furthering company's business objectives


Projects include: Residential Development (new & traditional build homes), hotels, warehouses, Highway - new roads and maintenance, airport terminal expansion, and civil works.

You will have/be:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent and ideally chartered.
  • Ideally have experience running a regional building/construction business.
  • Must have a track record in delivering a range of construction projects from residential to steel/RC frame (and ideally Civil and Highways) projects, £5M - £15M.
  • Working knowledge of precon/tender process, to include Government/Public Sector.
  • Working knowledge of project risk assessment, management and solutions.
  • Experience negotiating contracts with top and mid-tier contractors.
