Overview of the position:

As the sole agency supplier to the HM Prison Service for the provision of maintenance trades & support operatives, Hays is seeking to recruit a Handyperson for Chelmsford Prison, Chelmsford.
This is a long-term temporary to permanent job starting ASAP. You must be local to the area, and have mechanical experience or qualifications would be an asset. This long-term temporary job is based on Monday to Friday 39 hours per week. With some weekend working, with rest days to cover the additional times. The rate is £10.58/hr (including holiday) Monday - Friday. Some weekend work will be required with rest days to cover the additional work times.

Purpose of the Maintenance role:

As part of the Works Department you will be undertaking both reactive repairs and planned preventative maintenance. The work is varied and requires a can do attitude coupled to a willingness to learn, additional training will be given as required.

Currently the Prison has several refurbishment and general day-to-day maintenance projects underway. As such the prison require general handyman who can complete general tasks which include but are not limited to assisting other trades, general various tasks such as the installation of signage, basic painting and carpentry duties, the use of drills and hand tools, you will also be carrying out as part of the team, fire alarm testing and the checking of emergency lighting, along with other duties commensurate with your experience on this busy site, which will include paperwork to be completed as part of your day to day workload.

Chelmsford Prison has an excellent reputation as a local open prison. They pride themselves in engaging and involving employees working alongside them in the process of change. This job is in a unique working environment with a strong sense of team working. Always in demand, you could benefit from long-term contracts and possible permanent employment, there is also potential, once trained, to work in other prisons both locally and nationally. You must be local to the prison or have your own transport.

Experience:

The prison is looking for general handyperson with experience of mechanical work. Qualifications such as NVQ / City & Guilds is desirable but not essential.

Previous experience in a prison/ public sector is not required for this role. The nature of the role requires candidates to be security conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks, you will also need to be reliable and consistent, level headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Full training on working within a prison is provided by the department.

Security Clearance required:

All applicants will be subject to a DBS check and the HM Prison Service Security Clearance procedure. You must hold a valid passport or birth certificate & photo driving licence in your current address. All applicants must be able to provide details of 2 satisfactory references, at least one from an ex-employer.
