Prison Workshop Instructor

HMP Wayland, Thetford.

Long-term Temporary to Permanent Job, Based on 39 hours per week, Monday - Friday.

£10.80/hr (including holiday)

Overview of the position:

As the sole agency supplier to the HM Prison Service for the provision of maintenance trades & support operatives, Hays is seeking to recruit a Prison Workshop Instructor for Wayland Prison, Thetford.

The Instructor role is in a unique working environment with a strong sense of team working. Always in demand, you could benefit from long-term contracts and there is also potential, once trained, to work in other prisons both locally and nationally. You must be local to the prison or have your own transport.

Purpose of the Instructor role:

As part of the Industries Team within the specialist workshops, you will be responsible for instructing and overseeing small prisoner parties, working on textile projects, such as assembling basic plumbing parts & camouflage netting.

Group sizes can vary from x20 - 40 Prisoners. There will be permanent members of staff and Prison Officers in your location at all times, to oversee you and your personal safety.

Workshop Instructor Duties:

Supervise, manage and control up to x40 prisoners decently, safely and securely whilst carrying out all activities Ensure all tools, equipment and raw materials are safe, secure and properly accounted for
Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop
Contribute to risk and health and safety assessments on consumables
Induct prisoners to the workshop/area of work
Responsible for prisoners performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development
Provide support for prisoners where required; tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs
Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with Local Security Strategy (LSS)
Set work schedules and manage targets/quality standards, maintaining delivery of contractual arrangements
Patrolling perimeter and grounds
Train prisoners in aspects such as health and safety, machinery and tools usage Escorting contractors & vehicles
To take responsibility for prisoners performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development
Health & Safety Procedures
Supervise, manage and control prisoners decently, safely and securely whilst carrying out all activities
Conduct a metal detector scan or rub down search of prisoners attending and leaving their own workshops
Initiate product development reviews to maintain workshop/area of work output levels, and to provide variety of work for prisoners
Supervision, Checking & Searching Visitors
Actively contribute to prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, Assessment and Security Information Reports
Routine administrative work

Experience:

Previous experience in training, assessing or teaching would be ideal for this role. As would previous experience with offenders, prisoners, vulnerable adults or within a Prison or Educational facility.
A background in textiles or construction would be beneficial.
The nature of the role requires candidates to be security conscious and able to challenge potential compromises and risks, you will also need to be reliable and consistent, level headed and have exceptional interpersonal skills. Successful applicants will have a background in cleaning, and will be assessed based on the following competencies: Acting with integrity, respecting others, Building relationships and team working, communicating effectively, developing self and others.

Security Clearance required:

All applicants will be subject to the HM Prison Service Security Clearance procedure which can take 2-3 weeks, this may will include a DBS check.
You must hold a Valid Passport or Birth Certificate & Photo Driving Licence in your current address.
