Senior designer/designer

Responsible for: Design output

  • To ensure the production of a total design solution specific to each project; Ensuring compliance to manufacturers' recommendations and the company's stds /procedures as well as the client's requirements, specifications and current legislation.
  • Attendance at handover meetings to discuss the project, identify particular design issues and clarify scope of works.
  • Ensure that the production of working drawings/design is in accordance with the specifications received from the customer, amendments are highlighted, recorded and agreed with the Project Manager.
  • Ensure that the design is within the cost budget of the tender.
  • Review designs through liaison with the other parties involved prior to release for customer acceptance or comment.
  • Attendance at fortnightly project review meetings with the project team.
  • Chairing internal team reviews as required catching issues before they develop into problems.
  • Contribute to the Technical Library.
  • Ensure that manufacturer's guarantees and warranties have been obtained where necessary and that they are appropriate to the specification.
  • Has learned from experience and is using this experience to generate improvements for clients, the company and colleagues.
  • Chair both internal and external meetings as required to ensure smooth operation of the team.

Report to: Design Team Leader

  • Attend regular Design Team Leader meetings as directed by the Design Team Leader.
  • Be prepared for said meeting with information set out in meeting agenda/pro-forma.
  • Keep exemplary records in order to adequately track and record the design progress of each project and be able to report at short notice.
  • Should consider the impact of opting for particular design option or delivery outcome and be able to demonstrate the basis of the decision.


Oversee: Potential Design Team

  • Provide direction and support to the design team, ensuring both team and individual development needs are met.
  • Check that there are clearly defined methods of construction and setting out.
  • Check for build-ability, material selection, fixings and finishes to be used are appropriate to the specification, environment and structural requirements.
  • Agree with the designers any variation between the customer's specifications/drawings and the tender documents and advise them accordingly once verified with the Project Manager.
  • Ensure design work is carried out in accordance with the company CDM design procedures and drawings and schedules are updated regularly.
  • Chase and request outstanding information from clients. Ensuring continuity of work for the teams. When information is not forthcoming, ensure appropriate records are kept.
  • Review manufacturing schedules, procurement schedules and fixing lists in sufficient time to meet manufacturer's delivery dates (in-line with procurement dates provided)


Resolves: All design aspects of project Programmes: Workload

  • Ensure works are programmed in line with the procurement deadlines given by Project Management, review and advise any shortfall so immediate action can be taken.
