Key Responsibilities

  • Review and understand a cost plan and comment or contribute to the primary aspects
  • Assess key elemental rates
  • Measurement of construction works
  • Assist with procurement of Designers and Early works packages, including tender analysis and production of contract documentation
  • Design reviews
  • Contribute to Risk Management process
  • Aware of information required for cost reporting, and to provide information for and submit cost data to feed into the overall cost reporting
  • To provide basic advice on contractual terms and conditions, and understands the general contractual provisions such as bonds, guarantees, warranties, insurances, letters of intent and other common contractual mechanisms
  • Prepare tender documentation to enable comprehensive tender submissions to be returned from market
  • Undertake tender comparisons, reviewing the clarifications and exclusions of submissions
  • Assist in the negotiations of tenders and appointment of contractors
  • Read and interrogate complex drawings and undertake measurement of elements without supervision
  • Comprehensively operate a project cost system, accurately complete individual cost reporting forms, possess a full understanding of the sources of cost and assist with or prepare monthly cost reports for projects
  • Comprehensively compile forecast of cash inflows and outflows for major packages of work
  • Understand and operate a change management procedure
  • Monitor and influence specific cost items against a budget and report accordingly
  • Undertake valuation of multiple varied Sub-contract packages
  • Deploy and recognise negotiation skills to deliver commercial results
  • Use and apply various communication techniques to resolve/avoid disputes and to defend a commercial position
  • Interpret information contained on a programme and use progress records to assist with recording of contractual progress
  • Understand the range of construction technologies available to suit particular circumstances based upon experience and theory
  • Actively contribute to value engineering reviews

Person Specifications

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role
  • Degree educated
  • Working towards or recently chartered, preferably with RICS
  • Previous experience working for a large construction company
  • Previous experience working autonomously to deliver a small to medium project (less than £10 million), or as part of a commercial team on a large construction project providing support to the Commercial Manager/Commercial Leader on the project
  • Experience of residential schemes is desirable
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • An ability to communicate across the project team
  • Demonstrates an ability to work in a methodical and regulated approach to plan, execute and manage their works
  • Good knowledge and experience of Health and Safety requirements on a project
  • Knowledge of the various types of dispute resolution
